Timber windows in Blyth

The Sash Windows we make for Blyth is set out from a survey, not a size chart. Most of what we survey locally is border stone farmhouses, colliery terraces and coastal fishing cottages, which is not built to any modern module. Locally you are contending with the harshest combination of cold, wind and salt in England, so combined frost and salt damage stripping finishes within a few seasons is the fault we are called out to. In practice that means sliding sashes that run smoothly and hold position without slamming.

Nothing goes into manufacture until a surveyor has checked each opening on site. Photographs and approximate sizes are all we need to start.

One local point to factor in: Northumberland exposure justifies the heaviest sections and stainless fixings.

Blyth questions

Can you work on a listed building?

Yes, and a significant share of our work is listed or conservation area. We can supply drawings and section details to support a listed building consent or planning application, though the consent itself remains the owner's responsibility.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.

Is the timber certified?

All our stock is FSC certified and chain-of-custody documentation is supplied with the order, which most main contractors and specifiers now require for their records.

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.

What if the opening is out of square?

Most older openings are. The survey records the actual dimensions at several points and the unit is manufactured to suit, which is the main reason we survey rather than work from the sizes given over the phone.
